Are you planning to pack your valuables on your own? If yes, you can follow the seven important and effective packing tips mentioned below to make sure that everything goes as planned and your valuables come out of their boxes in perfect condition.
Use the right boxes
Packing right essentially means selecting the right size boxes. Use small boxes to pack books and other heavy items. Use bigger ones to pack light items, such as pillows, clothes, or linen. Large boxes packed with heavy items can become unmanageable even for professional movers. Heavy items packed in large boxes are more likely to get broken when they are being loaded, unloaded, or even during transit.
Put heavy items on the bottom of the boxes
It is advisable to put heavy items underneath comparatively lighter items. If you are also loading the truck without professional help, make sure that the heavier boxes get loaded first. Keep them towards the front of the truck to ensure proper balance.
Make sure there are no empty spaces in the boxes being packed
Use packing newspaper, packing paper, or old towels to fill in the gaps in the boxes as they being packed. This will keep your valuables secure inside. You need the boxes to be firm and well balanced as in many instances, the moving carriers will not handle boxes that are loosely packed or unbalanced.
Do not mix items belonging to different rooms in the same box
A good practice is to keep items belonging to a specific room in one box and not mix these with items from another room. This simple rule makes packing and unpacking quick and comparatively easy.
Label each box properly
Label each box according to its contents and the room it would be placed in after being unloaded. This way, the movers would know where to place the boxes in your new home.
Number each box and keep a list of inventory. This way, you can keep a track of the items you have already packed.
Tape boxes carefully
Use good quality tape to close the bottom and top seams of the packing boxes. Once this is done, you can use the tape to make a couple of wraps all the way around the box as well as the top and bottom edges to make the boxes sturdy and capable of withstanding stress.
Use pro-grade packing supplies for valuables
Packing fragile and expected items in regular paper needs to be avoided. Pictures in glass frames have to be handled with special care. Use a masking tape to make an X shape across the glass frame; this will hold the glass together even if it shatters and keep your picture well protected. You can bubble wrap the pictures before placing them in boxes. Make sure that there is a piece of cardboard between each framed piece to keep the artwork safe during transit.
