With Thanksgiving behind us and December coming in, we are now officially in the Holiday Season. This is the season of being grateful for everything we have and spending time with our family and loved ones. This is also the season to remember those not as fortunate as us and do whatever we can to spread some joy to them.
There’s no time like the holidays to do some reflecting and doing some charity work to help those less fortunate than us. That being said, if you happen to be moving during this time, there are a lot of things you can do help make this holiday season a great one for everyone.
For the next 25 days, MoverJunction will be posting ONE way in which you can reduce your moving cost and help someone in need at the same time, with our 25 DAY OF MOVING & GIVING series. We hope you use these tips while moving during this holiday season.
Its a WIN-WIN for everyone!!
Day 1
We all have closets full of clothes and shoes that we haven’t worn in years. This will be a perfect time to sort thru these items and donate whatever you don’t need. Remember, one person’s trash can be other person’s treasure!!!
Day 2
Giving away some of your non-perishable food items can put a bright smile on someone’s face this holiday. Several moving companies work with charities and will take any food that you want to donate. One such charity is MoveForHunger. Check them out and see if the moving company you hire will help you in donating the food items.
Also, you can give generously to your local food bank by dropping off items such as whole grain pasta, canned beef stew, unsalted nuts, no sugar added fruits, shelf-stable milk, canned tuna, canned chicken, canned salmon, brown rice etc.
Day 3
This holiday season is a unique opportunity to donate old toys your kids no longer play with to the big toy store in your area. Just one toy can make all the difference between a happy holiday and a boring one for some kids. Give generously and put a smile on the faces of as many kids as possible.
Day 4
If you have shelves filled with books that you have already read and are not likely to use in the future, there’s no reason to let them sit there and gather dust. You can donate your old college text books and CDs to charity homes or schools.
Day 5
Surprise someone with a gift this holiday season. Give unopened gift items you no longer need to friends, neighbors or their kids.
Day 6:
Having a garage sale is a great way to get rid of some of your stuff and reduce your moving load.
Day 7
You can create an extra space in your closet by giving away your vintage clothing and costumes to local theater groups and drama departments in schools. Inspire someone this holiday season!
Day 8
This holiday season, donate toys and children furniture to get rid of your unwanted clutter while making other children happy. You can donate toys and furniture your children have outgrown or that are not part of their favorites.
Day 9
What special gift are you willing to give to someone in your town this holiday season? You can find your community on the Free Cycle Network and donate something special to someone in your town.
Day 10
Giving to babies is one of the best thing anyone can do. Donate any baby items you no longer need to a toddler today and give their mothers a reason to be happy this holiday season.
Day 11
Share some knowledge and entertainment this holiday season. Donate your old college text books, music CDs and DVDs to your community library.
Day 12
If you can cook tasty meals and soups, why not cook one for a local homeless shelter at least once in a month?
Day 13
Don’t have time or help to load up and take things to the donation centers? Not to worry, several online resources are available where you can just post the things you want to give away and people will come pick it up. One such example is Craigslist.org
Day 14
When you donate your old electronic items to goodwill, you create opportunities for individuals in your community. You help them learn a new electronic skill or have access to devices that can improve their lifestyles.
Day 15
Donation boxes are reminders that someone somewhere may need some of the items you no longer need. Don’t hesitate to use the boxes…donate generously!
Day 16
Do more with Facebook and Twitter. Reach out to people in your community who may need the items you’re giving away. Or you can connect with people on OfferUp to sell or buy items.
Day 17
Do not forget old age homes and orphanages this holiday season. Show some love by donating items to orphanages and old age homes in your community and anywhere else possible.
Day 18
Homeless shelters in your community or anywhere else will appreciate a kind gesture of more bedding and blankets this holiday season. Donate generously!
Day 19
Every tried selling an old car with no luck? Look into donating it and get a tax write-off. Charities like Kars4Kids.org and many others will gladly take any old car off your hands and put it to great use for someone that can’t afford one.
Day 20
Where exactly can you donate your old car to veterans and kids this holiday season? “Day 20 Tip” is a great idea!
Day 21
Want to de-clutter and get rid of old household goods? Pick Up Lease will pick up your donation and leave a tax deduction receipt for you.
Day 22
Donation Town will send a truck to your home to pick up any item you want to donate this holiday season. Now you can donate conveniently!
Day 23
Habitat Restore will gladly accept any of your old clothing, appliances and furniture. Donate to the needy generously!
Day 24
Show some love this holiday season, donate a new item to a charity home and put a bright smile on someone’s face.
Day 25
Merry Christmas! Cook a tasty meal and feed at least one person at a homeless shelter today. Happy Holiday!
